Sapphire windows are precision optical components manufactured from synthetic single-crystal aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃). Synthetic sapphire is grown as a cylindrical crystal known as a boule, from which cores are extracted before being sliced and polished to achieve optical quality and dimensional accuracy. 

The single-crystal structure of sapphire means it contains no grain boundaries. This provides consistent mechanical strength and stable optical transmission under high pressure, temperature variation and chemical exposure. 

The manufacturing process involves several controlled stages, including crystal growth, boule formation, slicing and multi-stage polishing. Each stage helps control key characteristics such as thickness, flatness and surface quality. 

Sapphire windows are available in circular, rectangular, square and custom formats, including large geometries. In addition to sapphire windows, sapphire is also used in related components such as rods, plungers, ruby balls (sapphire balls with dopant) and other precision industrial parts.
